Taka-Onna (高女) is a yokai (being from Japanese mythology) who walks and wanders in people's rooms.

They are jealous and ugly ladies who have no popularity with men. These become taka-onnas because of their jealousy, some say it is a kind of oni.

Etymology

The Kanji for the tall woman is exactly what it says: (taka; height) + (onna, woman).

She is most likely an original creation by Toriyama Seiken, who apparently didn't feel very creative because she didn't give him a story. Fortunately the people of the Edo era filled in for him, and he approached with a small urban legend based on his image.

Myth: The carpenter and the Taka-Onna

Once in Wakayama Prefecture there was a man who worked the wood; this man got married and had a child, then decided to hire 30 servants whom he directed and when his son was 5 years old, he mysteriously disappeared.

After this situation, his servants began to die one by one; finally, when there were less than half left, a medium arrived at the house and asked what happened; the husband replied that nothing special and the medium then took precaution of this strange event.

The man in the house felt strange. His wife asked what the medium had done and the husband replied that he had only asked what was happening in the house and then retired. The man's wife became neurotic and when he saw her reaction, he got scared. Then the man lied to his wife that he had a fever and went to bed early.

Someone came to the foot of his bed and said: "When your wife returns look at her appearance and you must escape to the mountains, you must run and run away if you want to save your life!" After hearing this, his wife returned and watched her as she tried to lie on the bed pretending to sleep.

His wife became an oni. She was 2.1 meters tall. She took off her clothes and became a beautiful lady accompanied by a thunder-like rumble, but half of her body was still spellbound.

The husband was surprised and escaped to the mountains. His wife was a Taka-onna who could control the length of the parts of his body. She had exterminated the servants and if the husband had stayed there he would also have been killed by her.
